At Great Bentley Primary School, our aim is to inspire an intrinsic love of maths in our children. We value the importance of developing a range of mathematical skills including reasoning; problem solving and mental arithmetic.
Our problem solving and sophisticated questioning across the school encourages our children to make connections between different mathematical concepts and explain their reasoning behind problems that they face. We value the importance of challenge and encourage our children to challenge their own abilities to continually improve and build on their existing knowledge.
We believe in the importance of making maths as hands on and practical as possible to give the children the opportunity to apply their learning to a real-life context.
For our children, we have found that when discrete maths skills are taught and then further used to reinforce and enhance other areas of the curriculum, for example in DT, Science, Computing and Art, our children begin to understand how maths can be used in wider life.

On YouTube, Maths 4 Kids is a great channel that shows a wide variety of techniques involved in maths. Subscribe to their channel, you wont regret it!
It is a brand new channel aimed at showing you all that Maths can be fun and something everyone can do.

What we do to celebrate the children's achievements:
We celebrate the children's achievements weekly in assembly and issue certificates that can be celebrated at home with parents/ carers.

What will Maths look like in Early Years Foundation Stage?
Numbers as labels and for counting
- Counting up to ten and beyond, using cardinal numbers
- Recognising the numbers 1 to 9
- Counting aloud in ones, twos, fives, tens
- Estimating a number of objects and checking by counting
- Matching and comparing the number of objects in two groups
- Counting out a number of objects from a larger group
- Positioning items according to their place in a group using ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.)
- Using a number line to count on and back
- Finding one more or one less than a number from 1 to ten
- Sharing objects into equal groups and counting how many are in each group
- Understanding that ‘addition’ means combining and ‘subtraction’ means taking away
- Finding the total number of items in two groups by counting them all
- Comparing numbers and recognising which is ‘more’ or ‘less’
Shape, space and measures
- Comparing quantities and using words such as ‘greater’, ‘smaller’, ‘heavier’ or ‘lighter’
- Recognising and creating their own simple patterns
